"Rhythm in Violet & Gold" - Acrylic Artwork by Dick Phillips

“Rhythm in Violet and Gold”

Dick Phillips was a professional artist with over forty years of painting experience. His work received major awards in numerous national and regional juried shows.  He was affiliated with galleries in several states and had forty seven solo exhibitions and over 100 juried shows nationally.  His work recently included in the Arts in the Embassies Program sponsored by the United States Department of State.  He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art.

Starting in the late 1970’s, Dick’s paintings transitioned from representational to a more abstract style, paintings ranging from totally abstract to loose hints of reality. His work, executed in acrylic paints, has a soft , ethereal quality contrasted with suggestions of hard- edged geometric structure.  Tension created by the contrast between the loose, fluid flow of his paints and the more controlled structure gave his work some of its content.  However, the ultimate reality of his work was always about color and color relationships.

“One of his favorite quotations was from the late, American artist, Ben Shahn.  “There is a dialog between the painter and the painting.  The painting is trying to tell the painter what to do as the painter attempts to control or tell the painting what to do.”

“I simply try to stay out of the way and let the painting talk to me!””

Richard Cortez (Dick) Phillips passed away Friday July 15, 2011.  He was 78.  His contribution to the art world will be greatly missed.
